Match Report EDCA U17A
1
Day game against Western 16th December.
What
a fantastic game! Eastern won on the last ball of the
day by 2 runs to keep us 4 points in the lead going into
the last 2 day game.
We lost the toss and
were put into bat on a quick looking wicket. Once again
the top order found the going tough with Ben Horne 2,
Michael Haddleton 19, Fa’asi’u Fuatai 4 and Shawn Hicks
12. Matt Ansell and Will Mckay steadied the ship with
Matt being runout on 35. Enter Vedant Zaveri with
another brilliant innings of 75 not out off 62 balls. We
finished the innings with 192/7 after 50 overs.
Michael Ravlic opened
with a superb spell of quick bowling and Western were
quickly 3 wickets down for about 25 runs. Western then
settled into their work and after 34 overs were 4
wickets down for 111 runs and we were looking in
trouble. Shawn Hicks then had danger man Cameron
Fletcher caught behind by the always reliable Sam Flett,
followed by a great wicket to Vedant Zaveri. We then
witnessed a brilliant running backwards catch to Will
Mckay and Matt Ansell throwing the stumps down for a
wonderful runout.
Last over, Western
required 5 runs to win with a batsman who had just
celebrated 50 and the number 11. Sam Dodd was chosen for
the job and gave a fantastic display of tight bowling to
keep the number 11 on strike and to give Eastern the win
by 2 runs.

Day Game 14/15th December
Eastern won the toss and
elected to bat. The first 2 hours were tough going with
the ball moving off the pitch and runs were scarce.
After a couple of hours and 200 balls later we were
around 85/4 with wickets lost to Ben Horne 1, Michael
Haddleton 15, Fa’asi’u Fuatai 29 and Shawn Hicks 24.
Matt Ansell then seized the opportunity and scored an
outstanding 113, ably supported by Will Mckay with 74
and a quick fire 78 to Vedant Zaveri off 70 balls. We
batted the day and finished in the very commanding
position of 376/8.
Day 2 was always going to
be a long day in the field as the pitch had lost its
initial life. The boys worked hard in the field and
bowled well. Shawn Hicks 3/22 off 11 overs and Michael
Ravlic 3/20 off 11.4 overs shared the bowling honours.
Wickets also went to Ben Horne, Fa’asi’u Fuatai and
Vedant Zaveri and catches to Fa’asi’u Fuatai, Nick
Mclean and Ganesh Ratnasabapathy. Ganesh also shone with
a crucial run-out, getting rid of danger man Simon
Hickey with a hard flat throw from the boundary above
the bails. Will Mckay showed a great opportunistic
stumping as the batsmen walked out of his crease.
We bowled Manukau out for
198 after 85 overs and remain at top of the table.

Sunday 13th
December
A game of 2 halves! EDCA lost the
toss and Central chose to bat first on the artificial
wicket. We bowled and fielded extremely well ensuring
that Central found it very difficult to score runs.
Michael Ravlic was the pick of our bowlers with 4
wickets for 27 runs off 10 overs and he was ably
assisted by Sam Dodd with 2 wickets for 14 runs off 7
overs and Vedant Zaveri with 1 wicket for 24 runs off 10
overs.
Eight boys took catches and the
fielding was of a high standard to have Central all out
for 150 runs in the 50th over.
Our turn to bat and we managed to
lose wickets at regular intervals which built pressure
on ourselves. Fa’asi’u Fuatai had a solid innings of 36
but we needed our middle order of Will McKay and Sam
Flett to steady the ship. Will scored an excellent 38
and Sam was 22 not out when we won on the 1st
ball of the 50th over with seven wickets
down.
Smiles returned to a group of very
nervous parents recognising that we now have 2 wins from
2 games and a strong belief within the team that we are
a strong team if we play to our potential.
Sunday 6th
December
EDCA won the toss and we saw an
excellent opening partnership between Ben Horne and
Michael Haddleton of 90 runs against a strong bowling
attack from North Harbour Burgundy. Ben then went on to
have a brilliant maiden century of 104 runs, ably
supported by Michael Haddleton 23 and Shawn Hicks 42.
EDCA ended up with 201/3 off 50 overs.
Our bowling was a little rusty, but
the boys worked well together and Fa’asi’u Fuatai had
outstanding figures of 5 wickets for 25 runs off 8.2
overs. Sam Dodd took 2 wickets and Shawn Hicks had a
very tidy spell of bowling of 6 overs for 12 runs and
one wicket.
While we can be better in the field
we saw 2 great runs outs by Michael Haddleton and Matt
Ansell, an excellent leg-side stumping by Sam Flett and
good catches by Matt Ansell (2), Sam Flett (2), Shawn
Hicks, Nick McLean and Sam Dodd.
North Harbour Burgundy were all out
for 171 providing Eastern with a great first up win
against a very capable team.
Primary School Boys - Teams
Announced
Hello
I am pleased to confirm the following
boys have been selected
as the EDCA
“A”,
EDCA
“B”
and our six members of a combined EDCA/Central B team
for the tournament. Congratulations to all those
selected.
All boys listed below, including the
non-travelling reserves, are invited to a capping
ceremony at the University Clubrooms at Colin Maiden
Park this Friday 4 November at 6.00pm
This year EDCA has been provided the
opportunity to put an additional 6 boys forward to play
in a combined EDCA/Central team to play in the “B”
Districts tournament. This opportunity has become
available because Auckland Cricket has decided to also
introduce an Auckland U15 Girls team to compete in the
PSB Districts “B” competition. There will now be 8
teams competing in the “B” competition.
The selectors were given the task of
liaising with the Central selectors, and producing even
balanced, “B” teams that they believe will
compete on an equal footing at the tournament. From an
EDCA perspective, we are excited about being able to
give an additional 6 players the opportunity to play in
this tournament. EDCA and Central were approached to
provide the 6 additional players each as recognition of
our significant growth in player numbers at junior
level. I must reiterate, there is no differentiation
between the playing strength of the boys selected for
EDCA “B” and the combined EDCA/Central B team. Those
two teams were selected according to balance of the
respective teams.
The coach of the EDCA “A” team will be
Nigel Fletcher. The coach of the EDCA “B” team will be
Simon Wood. The coach of the combined EDCA/Central “B”
team will be Sri Rajasekar. Managers will be appointed
shortly to liaise with you about practice times, and
general information in the lead up to the tournament.

The Eastern District Cricket Association
(EDCA) is an association between 3 Auckland Cricket
Clubs – Auckland University Cricket Club, the Grafton
United Cricket Club, and the Parnell Cricket Club. It
also encompasses two secondary schools, Sacred Heart
College and St Peters College. For representative
honours, the Auckland Cricket Association divides the
greater Auckland area into regional associations, of
which EDCA is one. The other regions are North Harbour,
Western District, Central and Manakau. The aim of the
EDCA is to promote cricket in the region, and to have a
strong united voice to take to Auckland Cricket.
In September and October, EDCA calls for
nominations from the clubs for their elite cricketers to
make up 2 teams in each of the following age groups:
-
Primary School Boys
(Years 7 and 8)
-
Under 15 (as of 1
Sept) Boys
-
Under 17 (as of 1
Sept) Boys
These nominated players will then go
through a series of trials, games and coaching before
final teams are announced to represent the District at
the annual district tournaments run by Auckland Cricket
(run prior to Xmas, and between Xmas and New Year). At
the conclusion of these tournaments, Auckland Cricket
announces Auckland Representative teams to play other
cricket associations from around the country.
Finally, in April, Auckland Cricket asks
for nominations from the districts for 3-4 outstanding
individuals from each age group to trial for the
Auckland Cricket Winter Academy.
Clearly, the process starts at the EDCA
trials held in late October and early November. It is
vitally important players wanting to progress through to
representative honours and Auckland Academy selection
need to be as well prepared as possible coming into
these trials. It is the role of the clubs/individuals
to prepare themselves for these EDCA trials. EDCA will
provide professional coaches and selectors to select,
train and coach these teams in the lead up to, and over
the course of the district tournaments.
